Depression is not only sadness. It can change energy, motivation, concentration, sleep, appetite, self-worth, and the ability to experience pleasure. For some people, one of the most frustrating symptoms is decision fatigue: the feeling that even simple choices require more effort than is available.
A temporary routine can conserve energy. Repeat a few meals, keep essential items in predictable places, use a short list with one priority, and ask someone you trust to offer two options instead of an open-ended question. These are supports, not evidence that you are lazy or incapable.
Depression can overlap with anxiety, trauma, ADHD, grief, substance use, medical conditions, and medication effects. A qualified clinician can help determine what kind of evaluation or treatment may be appropriate. Therapy can help replace self-judgment with smaller, sustainable steps.
When digital wellness tools become another demand
Mood trackers and habit apps can help some people notice patterns, but missed check-ins can become evidence for self-criticism. Use tools lightly. A single sentence in a notes app may be more useful than a perfect dashboard. If tracking increases guilt, stop and bring that reaction into therapy.
An unanswered digital question
Can an app distinguish between a person who chooses not to complete a task and a person whose depression has made the task inaccessible? Most systems cannot. The deeper question is whether digital mental-health tools can respond to reduced capacity with care rather than escalating reminders.
