Digital Burnout: When Being Always Connected Starts to Hurt

Laine Bermansohn September 3, 2026 5 min read

Being connected can be useful, but constant availability can gradually turn connection into pressure. Notifications, work messages, social comparison, family expectations, news, and health apps may keep the nervous system in a state of anticipation. Digital burnout is not a formal diagnosis; it is a useful phrase for the exhaustion that can develop when online demands exceed a person’s capacity to recover.

Signs digital connection may be affecting wellbeing

You may check your phone before you notice what you feel, struggle to stop scrolling, feel tense when messages remain unanswered, or have difficulty resting without documenting or consuming something. Sleep can become fragmented when devices follow you into bed. Online comparison may also intensify anxiety, loneliness, shame, or a sense that everyone else is coping better.

The goal is not to reject technology. Start with a small experiment: turn off nonessential notifications, create a device-free transition after work, move social apps off the home screen, or protect the first and last minutes of the day. Notice what changes without treating the experiment as a moral test.

If reducing screen time creates intense distress, or if online activity is connected to trauma, compulsive behavior, work demands, or isolation, discuss it with a mental-health professional. A rigid digital detox may not fit every person or household.

The unanswered question

Many platforms are designed to maximize attention, but wellbeing depends on autonomy. How should digital products measure success when a healthy user closes the app, pauses, or chooses not to engage? Can technology support regulation without turning calm into another metric to optimize? These questions belong to designers, clinicians, families, and users alike.

Radiant Recovery & Counseling can help clients explore anxiety, stress, sleep concerns, burnout, relationships, and the emotional effects of a digitally demanding life.
