Generalized Anxiety Disorder Therapy in Minneapolis, MN

Someone has probably told you that you're a worrier, maybe your whole life, in that affectionate, exasperated tone that makes it sound like a personality trait. You've probably told yourself the same thing. But generalized anxiety disorder isn't a personality type. It's a clinical condition in which worry becomes excessive, persistent, and most importantly, difficult or impossible to control. It doesn't respond to reason, reassurance, or evidence that things are actually fine. At Radiant Recovery & Counseling in Minneapolis, we treat GAD with the specificity it requires.

What Generalized Anxiety Disorder Actually Looks Like

GAD is often misunderstood because it doesn't always show up as panic attacks or dramatic episodes. It's subtler and more pervasive, and in many ways more exhausting precisely because it never fully stops. The clinical criteria call for excessive anxiety and worry occurring more days than not for at least six months, across multiple areas of life. It usually comes with at least three of the following:

Restlessness or feeling keyed up and on edge — a physical tension that doesn't go away

Getting tired easily, because running a constant worry loop all day is exhausting

Trouble concentrating, or the mind going blank when worry takes over

Irritability, often the symptom most visible to the people around you

Muscle tension, especially in the jaw, shoulders, and lower back

Sleep trouble — either falling asleep or staying asleep — because the mind won't quiet down

Why GAD Goes Undertreated in Minnesota

Minnesota has a genuine cultural relationship with stoicism and self-reliance, and that makes seeking help for something as invisible as anxiety feel indulgent. GAD in particular gets underreported because people have often been told, directly or indirectly, that their worry is just who they are. We see this pattern often in our Minneapolis and Twin Cities clients: people who've managed their anxiety alone for years, sometimes decades, who arrive at therapy not in crisis but in quiet exhaustion — tired of the mental noise, tired of the physical tension, tired of the gap between how they look from the outside and how they feel on the inside.

Evidence-Based GAD Treatment at Radiant Recovery

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the gold standard for GAD, with the strongest evidence base of any psychotherapy approach for this condition. Our CBT for GAD targets cognitive restructuring — identifying and challenging worry thoughts — worry postponement, building genuine tolerance for uncertainty, and relaxation and body-based work addressing the physical side of anxiety. We also offer medication consultation through our psychiatric providers for clients for whom SSRIs, SNRIs, or buspirone complement therapy. Many GAD clients do well with therapy alone; others find combined treatment most effective. We discuss this openly and without pressure either way.
