September 8 is 988 Day, part of National Suicide Prevention Month, and this year's SAMHSA theme is “988 Reasons: Your reason is reason enough.” It's a direct response to the idea that you need to earn the right to reach out, that your struggle has to be severe enough, or dramatic enough, before it counts. It doesn't.
What 988 actually is
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a free, confidential service available by call, text, or chat, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at 988lifeline.org. It connects you to a trained crisis counselor, not a form to fill out or a screening you need to pass. You decide how much to share, and there is no requirement that your situation be a full-blown emergency before you call.
Reasons that count, even when they don't feel like enough
Stress, grief, relationship strain, loneliness, or simply feeling like you cannot cope with today are all reasons enough to call. Mental health challenges don't always look like a crisis; they can look like persistent fatigue, a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, or feeling disconnected from people you love. None of that has to escalate further before it deserves attention.
Support beyond the moment of crisis
988 exists alongside other resources, not as the only option.
